Steampunk Owl Box

For this fortnights challenge #121. at Creative Fingers we are lucky to have one of my absolute favourite artists as our sponsor, Rick St. Dennis, and as always it is an 'Anything goes' theme. You are more than welcome to join with your creations! The fantastic owl from RSD is most likely based on Bubo, from the movie Clash of the Titans, and is really Athenas owl in greek mythology,  :)

My project is a mixed media altered steampunk kind of box. It can house pencils or paintbrushes etc., and I'm thinking it will make a very cool gift this christmas! It's for a dude, so no embellishes other than the decor on the box. If it were for myself I'd add some bling as well. But since there is not, It is a very economical, easy and quick to make christmas gift. Plus you probably have all the things you need to make it already! Some things like the adhesive metal tape and fiberglass tape is a bit expensive, you will for sure find in a hardware store, but you can also just use doublesided tape or glue with aluminium foil that you have in the kitchen, it tears very easily though so I'd invest in a metal tape.
- Or you could get foiled/metallic cardstocks, or even some heavy duty kitchen foil - as was pointed out to me by Autumn :)

There is lots of stuff that would create great texture, magic mesh, lace or jute for example. You can add diecuts, letters, buttons, coins, strings and other things you can think of. It would be good to have a paperstub to rub around the items to make them stand out well, and some tools to make dots, scratches and lines with, like my little ball tool in the photo below. I just went the easy way here with embossingfolders!

There are many great tutorials online, just search on youtube for metal art / metal embossing / or Metal foil tape. Like the SwirlydoosKits video I was inspired by here and RachO113 Metal tape art

The cardboard box I picked up for about a dollar, but I'm sure it would be easy enough to create a similar pencil container with some cardboard scraps, empty cereal boxes/toilet rolls, or up-cycle a box you already have! :)
I added some fun foam (mosegummi) strips to the sides, and covered it with metallic tape and the other tape is a Fiberglass tape.

After I'd covered my box, I covered one side of it at a time with black paint, let it sit for a minute - then using kitchen paper to rub most of the paint off. The grooves in the metal will hold the black and make the embossed areas really stand out. Repeat until you get the look you want, and let dry. I painted the inside while I waited.

I added the lettering through a stencil with Inka Gold on the inner cardboards, and used a Tim Holtz blending tool. Then the box got rubbed with the blending tool / sponge. It dries pretty quickly, so I keep a baby-wet-wipe covering the inka gold I had put on a plastic sheet with a spatula. But if you don't have theese tools you can use a metallic paint and a cosmetic sponge instead.

The Distress ink pads in the photo are the ones I used to watercolor the owl, as well as a red and a yellow twinkling H2O watercolor. I used a silicone adhesive to adhere the owl to the box, but any other kind of strong adhesive would also be good. If you want to seal your project you can with a fixative or other sealant, but I find it keeps well without :)

Northern lights & Star gazing

http://papirplaneten1.blogspot.no/2016/11/november-utfordring.html

http://papirplaneten1.blogspot.no/

I have something to confess... I am a stamp-o-holic... that means my guilty pleasure is the cronic hoarding of rubberstamps, clearstamps and digital stamps.. and yes I hoard scrapping supplies such as design papers as well.. I know I share this with so many of you.. and Gollum! As him I am a lost cause.. ;)  ... My preciousss!
Unfortunately there is not enough crafting hours to be able to use all those fabulous stamps, so most have never even been taken out to play! That is super sad.. and something that I have to change!
I solemnly swear to at least have one old stamp never to have been used and one year old or more, on every other project from now onwards on my creations! Like this super cute snowman duo gazing up at the stars and the northern light ♥ This christmas card is my DT inspiration for PapirPlaneten, a norwegian challengeblog and craft shoppe.

I used the pine trees die and a circle die to draw a frame for my distress inked northern light sky. Shades of green are the most usual aurora borealis up here in the northern parts of Norway, it very active all winter, and I live in a rural area, so there is not much light-pollution, not managed to get good photos of it though :)
I can't find the video I once saw how to create such a background now, since it's so long ago, but it is a similar technique as Jennifer McGuire uses here: Starry Night Sky Stamping & Inked Shaker Cards. Just make it go diagonally instead, and use colours for northern lights! How to Create a Galaxy Background is also a cool technique for a night sky by TheCraftBunny :)

The Distress Ink recipe for my northern lights background are: Blend swipes of Tumbled glass, Twisted citron and Cracked Pistachio for the northern lights. Add Salty Ocean for definition, and fill the rest of the sky. Then blend Black soot on top of some of the blue and a lot of black towards the edges. I sprinkled/flicked with fingers water droplets onto the surface several times, drying in between, and finished it off with a light mist of perfect pearls, as well as some spatters/blobs flicked with a watercoloring brush off from an acrylic block.
